Freezing Time

Nikon D40 - 12/16/2011 - f-20 - 10 sec - ISO 200 - 27mm eqv.

This is a long exposure of one waterfall in Amnicon Falls State Park WI. This was in the evening, which allowed a higher shutter speed. The waterfall was still in the process on freezing, thus the cakes of ice under the falls (mostly blurred, with a few clear ones along the left side).

Reflecting on Fall

Cannon PowerShot A540 - 9/16/2012 - f-3.2 - 1/800 sec - ISO Unknown - Unknown focal length - 9 exposures.

This is a panorama stitched out of 9 photos using Hugin. The colors were white balanced afterward in GIMP. I really like the crisp reflections, and the clouds in the western sky(to the left of the picture).

A Steaming Punk

Nikon L100 - 4/2/2011 - f-3.7 - 1/94 sec - ISO 80 - 36mm eqv.

This was a really fun photo to take and edit. The shell on the persons head is the housing of an old Johnson outboard motor.

The editing was a little different, and I have thus generated two different versions. I first processed the colors to be more realistic, have better contrast, and fill the entire dynamic range. I then sharpened the picture. After that I was working on multiple layers, with filters built into GIMP. Both versions use the same layers, just in a different mix of modes and opacities.

Please view these at full size and let me know what you think, and which you think is better.

Winter Night

Nikon D40 - 1/27/2012 - f-10 - 30 sec - ISO 200 - 45mm eqv.

This photo was taken after dark of a river flowing into Lake Superior. The unified colors are what came out of the camera, and part of what drew me to the picture. The only editing was using the value curve to broaden the contrast.

Liquid Sky

Canon PowerShot A540 - 5/18/2010 - f/5.0 - 1/160 sec - ISO ? - 18.4mm eqv.

This image was taken on a point and shoot Canon camera. It turned out surprisingly well for the camera, and the rich colors caught my attention. This is from the earlier days of my artistic photography, before I owned a camera of my own.

A Little Color

Nikon D40 - 12/29/2011 - f-4.2 - 1/200 sec - ISO 1600 - 39mm eqv.

This image was taken at Amnicon Falls State Park, of one of the sand stone cliffs next to the river. The photo was not very good as a color photo, so I desaturated it using F-Spot (I didn't want to spend the time it would take to start GIMP) which didn't look any better. I then edited it so that it still had a small amount of color which turned out much better.

Daytime?

Nikon D40 - 4/4/2012 - f-3.5 - 30 sec - ISO 1100 - 27mm eqv.

This photo has prompted a number of people to ask how I managed to get stars in the day time. The trees and grass in the foreground are lit by a full moon, which also gave the sky the blue daytime look.

This particular piece of artwork was not totally complete in my view. I wanted to find a more readable font for the main text. It was my second complete artwork for mintCast. The background took me a number of tries to get the proper texture and 3D look to it. I started with a flame fractal rendered by the flame plugin included in GIMP. This was then colorized and mapped to a gradient which were combined to give a subtle shift to the highlights. Next I made a drop shadow for the visible parts of the flame, which was accomplished with the help of depth mapping based on brightness. Finally I added texture via a number of different plugins. All of the text was very simple.
